People shop till they drop; inflation fails to dampen the festive mood
PONDA: The town of Ponda wore a festive look on Saturday – nearly eleven days before Ganesh Chaturthi and the market was flooded with people from all walks of life shopping well in advance and preparing for the big day on August 31.
After two years of low-key celebrations due to the Covid -19 pandemic and with no curbs this year, the Goans were in a celebratory mood and really planning to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in a grand way. Inflation also did not dampen people’s party mood.
There was business with pleasure with all kinds of shops, stalls, festival bazaars flooded with goods and items needed for the Chovoth festival and people rush to pick up from the shops.
It’s the only time that gives small and big sellers a chance to make a quick buck, as anything on the market is easily sold, a local seller said.
There is a huge demand for firecrackers, fruits, vegetables, electronic accessories, shoes, furniture, new televisions, clothes, etc.
Business was buoyant for large clay idols despite the rising cost of clay and traditional craftsmen were seen putting the finishing touches on their Ganeshas.
While the men were busy painting and decorating their houses, the women were busy preparing sweet dishes such as neuros, ladoos, modaks, etc.
The youths were seen practicing ghumat aarthi and beating the drums to perfection.
Vishal Fadte from Ponda said that this year there is a bigger market rush as there is no pandemic fear and advised that more police should be delegated here as chain robbery cases and flights were increasing.
Sarvajanik Shree Ganeshotav Mandal Sadar Ponda celebrates his Golden Jubilee year in a grand way at Kranti Maidan in Ponda. Sunil Desai elected president for this year’s celebration. Zareshwar Ganeshotav Mandal and Budhwar Peth Mandal are also preparing to celebrate the festival on a large scale.
